I was recently sent a gorgeous stack of fabric (plus a book and some cards!) from the Journeys collection by Kathy Davis. I have been wanting to make myself a new bag and had the Amy Butler book, Style Stitches, (affiliate link) checked out of the library. I decided to make myself the Teardrop Bag using some of the Journeys fabric:
(I didn't get photos taken when the bag was brand new because I made it in a rush before vacation. It's a little bit broken in here--it's been a great bag and I really like it!)
My thoughts on the pattern and the bag--
*I used the recommended Shapeflex interfacing; next time I might try a stiffer interfacing or interline the bag with stiffer canvas or use fusible fleece instead. (It's a little floppy.)
*There is an error in the book for the larger sized Teardrop bag. If you want to make this bag, check out the correction for the pattern on this page.
*I followed the pattern for the handle and it turned out too narrow for my tastes, so I made another one and widened it.
*I found some good tips on inserting magnetic snaps here. I used 2 layers of interlock knit to reinforce the snap pieces, instead of fleece.
*I sewed some dividing seams in the pocket, you can sort of see them in this pic:
My phone fits just right in that center pocket.
*The strap. I lengthened the strap so I could wear it cross-body but I don't think I got it quite right. Someday I need to figure out how to make an adjustable-length strap.
*And, I used sewn-in interfacing on one side of the strap and added some sturdiness by using a layer of twill fabric in place of interfacing the other side of the strap fabric.
Ok, you made it! The folks from Kathy Davis Designs would also like to give a set of these fabrics to one of my readers. The giveaway includes:
Half-yard cuts of the following fabrics (this was my set, obviously I've used some of them): *The strap. I lengthened the strap so I could wear it cross-body but I don't think I got it quite right. Someday I need to figure out how to make an adjustable-length strap.

I like all of these... but I LOVE the text fabric, and the dragonflies are my favorite, too! The large floral in the top row is also super pretty.
Also included in the giveaway is the book Scatter Joy, along with a pile of gorgeous greeting cards, all by Kathy Davis as well.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 346 of 346 Newer› Newest»Something interesting is it is my son Caleb's 11 birthday.
I like the bag you made. I too have the problem with handles being the wrong length.
Something interesting... I live in the Chilliwack, BC Canada. We have a very wet climate (especially this year!) but that keeps things lush and green. Our drinking water has been entered in world competitions and has come out as high as 5th best in the world. We're pretty proud of that! I'm a mom of 5 kids, ages 2-10. I'm busy but it's a good thing to busy with. Is that enough interestingness? :-) Hope you have a good day!
Pretty fabric and an interesting book. It looks like you've had a lovely trip, I'm hoping we make it to a beach this summer. Thanks for the chance.
I'm just so happy the sun is shining after the rain this morning. Not too interesting, but that's all I've got! :)
Hmm telling you something interesting is harder than it seems. Maybe I'll tell you something mundane instead :)
We're having BBQ chicken for dinner.
hehehe
I love your bag. If I win the fabric, I'll have to purchase the pattern and make one of my own!
Lovely fabrics, thanks for the chance to win!
Thanks for the lovely giveaway chance...and I might just have to try and make that bag for myself...But I still get frightened by those kind of patterns...chicken, I know. x

Something interesting: my Scottie has one big ear and one little ear! Thanks for the giveaway!
Oh, those blues are sweet! Something interesting: I read in a fabric recycling article recently that something like 98% of the clothing donated to the Goodwill is "unusable" as clothing in North America and is either sold as rags, or shipped to third world countries.
I'm new to this whole blogging thing so this giveaway event has been a great opportunity for me to find great sites like this. Those fabrics are adorable and I really like that bag. So charming!! Many thanks!!
What an awesome giveaway - thanks for the chance! I'm trying to think of something interesting to say this late at night... I made a little skirt for my daughter this evening & I wish I put the pocket a little lower & am mulling taking it off & repositioning it. But I probably won't. xo

I'll tell you about my strip club comment to my children. One day I was getting ready to go to my LQS' strip club. My children asked me where I was going. I said without thinking, "I am going to the quilt shop for their strip club". They were flabbergasted that I would do such a thing. I had a bit of explaining to do. LOL :-)
Nice job on the bag. I have that book, and the teardrop will probably be my next project from it.
This bag was beautiful:-)
I have to agree with you, LOVE the dragonfly fabric..my fav

My interesting fact: when my youngest child accepts his diploma next week, it will be the end of exactly 30 years of continual family enrollment in the same school district. Where did the time go?
In one year my granddaughter will begin kindergarten and my daughter will be where I was just three decades ago. The circle of life, my friends, the circle of life.
Lovely fabrics!
The first time I met my husband, he was still smoking, so I blew him off without telling him why. The next year we met at the same music/dance camp, and he'd quit just a couple weeks before. Now we're taking our son to that same camp!
If only I knew something interesting to say...but thanks for hosting! The bag is cute.
Thanks for the pattern review! Cute bag too.
Something interesting?
Just tried Wendy's new blueberry, strawberry, almond chicken salad with Asiago cheese. Upscale fast food? That was interesting (and good)
Lovely fabrics! I'm really enjoying finding all this great sites today. Thank you!
